With Covid-19 still going around, a little sore throat or cold cough can get us extremely worried. Throat sprays are an easy over-the-counter relief, but can they help in cases of Covid?

The question is answered by a recent study done by the UERM Memorial Medical Center Research team which shows Difflam-C, a locally-available antiseptic gargle solution, to significantly alleviate the "Covid-19 sore throat."

The combination of Benzydamine HCl and Chlorhexidine gluconate in Difflam-C significantly shortened the duration of the said symptom in patients. Some resolve on the first day of treatment, while most resolve within five days. A notable difference compared to the seven to 10 days that it usually takes to resolve a sore throat.

"This gargle solution could be viewed as an effective treatment for patients with odynophagia [painful swallowing] or dysphagia [difficulty swallowing], conditions associated with severe sore throat among Covid-19 patients," said Dr. Nailes, a proponent of the study.

It is important to note that the study is yet to be peer-reviewed but the results are extremely encouraging in addressing the Covid-19 sore throat, especially with a safe, effective, and widely available gargle solution such as Difflam-C.

With most schools and offices encouraging face-to-face activities, it is important to be extra cautious. While people can use Difflam-C regularly — even without a sore throat — as an extra blanket of safety, it is still important to protect to take necessary steps such as getting vaccinated with boosters, the observance of standard health protocols, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are the current mainstays for the prevention of Covid-19 infection.
