NEW YORK—Two-time US Open champion Serena Williams showed little sign of her knee injury in her first match in 4 1/2 weeks on Monday night, advancing to the second round with ease by overwhelming Sandra Kleinova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-3.

“I performed at a decent level today. I’m finally getting to a point where I’m actually playing better and focusing better,” Williams said.
