Joseph Gordon Levitt has a lot of geeky fan girls. He’s got wonderful credentials—he played Tommy Solomon in the ‘90s sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun; he appeared in 10 Things I Hate About You, 500 Days of Summer, Inception, and 50/50—most often as a really relatable type. Up next he plays a character named John Blake in the Batman finale: Dark Knight Rises, and he’ll also be playing Robert Todd Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln.

I decided to give his indie film, Hesher a spin the other night. I think if Joseph Gordon Levitt was not the actor playing the title role, I would totally be annoyed with the character. At first, his anarchist antics are funny and shocking—blowing things up, destroying things, turning things over, knocking things around. I actually thought he was playing Tyler Durden to a character named TJ—a young man who has not only lost his mother, he also has to deal with a school bully and a depressive father (Rainn Wilson).
